Long HDMI Cables - Do They Work?

Long HDMI Cables - Do They Work?

Hdmi

As if it's not bad enough with all this HDMI "stuff" that potential purchasers also have to worry about long HDMI cable runs. In the days of analog video the reliability of signal transmission over long cable lengths was never a problem but in the early days of HDMI and DVI we heard rumors of consumers encountering problems over relatively short runs but things have improved over time but the actual length you can run long HDMI cables over is still an industry hot potato.

Let's look at the latest HDMI specification for an answer to the question. Every cable has to be tested by the HDMI authorized test centers before they are able to gain compliance certification. These certificates can be used as some kind of unofficial guide for workable cable lengths. There are a number of cables that are compliant at lengths over 10 meters and there are some that have passed the testing up to 13.0 meters, so these are proven not to degrade the signal beyond a point stipulated by the accreditors. A good piece of advice is to buy certified cable with the latest specification, at this time HDMI is at 1.3b, but 1.3 and 1.3a are also acceptable, as the test protocols these cables have to pass to receive the standard are more stringent than for prior specification, say 1.1 or 1.2.

Before you are tempted to buy anything over 13.0 meters (45-foot), they are available and being marketed as compliant, then it may be wise to ask to see a copy of the certification because at this present time the length of 13.0 meters (45-foot) is the longest none boosted (amplified) cable that I have seen with the correct certification.

That said, there are available HDMI cables that are classed as active which use powered amplifiers to boost the signal enabling longer runs of cable to be used. An EQ unit is also used on these active cables which looks at lost high frequency data and then compensates for this. These systems do work, but with no reliable information concerning actual effective length, the added costs involved and the extra possibility of signal delivery failure from the inclusion of extra components it may be a step to far for your home entertainment system and best left to commercial applications.

But all is not lost if you need to run longer lengths of cables. Just bear in mind the HDMI spec is their so you can be confident that when you build your system the compliant signal (source) can be connected to a compliant unit which in turn can then be connected to another using compliant cables and when you switch everything on it will work. As with all specification, in there will be built some leeway - over engineered - and so the source signal delivered to the HD enabled equipment is better than is needed for that equipment to function as stated. This gives you a couple of options, options that do not fit into the specification so are not guaranteed to work as in the example above, but options which have been proven to work and do not have the added costs of amplification.

There are connectors available which, although not compliant, will do a job and of course there are the over length (for compliance) cables. If you are to go this way it is worth bearing in mind that the higher the bit rate your HD enabled equipment is pulling the less chance of success you have. You also need to remember that this also applies to long chains, HDTV to Blu-ray or home theater connected to the internet streaming video on demand at 1080p will be pushing longer cable lengths, those over a compliant length, to it's limits. But for 480p, 720p or 1080i they may work fine. Do you see just how hit and miss this can be.

Now take into account future advances, which you should if you are putting these cables in walls etc., as if you are running on the limits of the cables this could stop you upgrading. Take where we are at present. 1080p is the latest resolution for HDTV. Not that long ago 480p was the norm, then came 720p and 1080i which uses a bit rate almost three times that of standard 480p. Then along came 1080p that doubles the bit rate consumption of 1080i and 720p. Now we stand on the edge of 3D TV, 16 bit color and 1460p (and above), 16 bit color alone will double the required bit rate for current standard resolutions, so you see where this could go. One more important point to consider when deciding whether to go long or not. It is a fact that on short cables, those of 2-3 meter (6-10-foot) length, the quality matters less. A cable costing a few dollars will perform just as good as one costing tens of dollars, but when entering the realms of none compliance quality matters far more. Generally speaking, the lower quality the cable is then the lower the effective working distance will be when depth of color or picture resolution increases.

So lets unravel what's been said regarding long HDMI cables and their reliability. For the lengths that are HDMI compliant, those lengths up to about 13 meters (45-foot), their use is pretty much guaranteed, even if you are using the cheaper options, for 480p, 720p, 1080i and - even if not as consistently reliable - 1080p so go ahead and use them with confidence. The same goes for those shorter cables of 1-3 meters (3-10-foot) lengths, though care should taken when using them in long signal chains as they could become unreliable. Cheaper options of the longest HDMI compliant cables working on the limits of it's performance capabilities may struggle in the 1460p, 16 bit color future and their use needs to be questioned if their installation is behind ceilings or walls as the additional cost of a more expensive cable may be less than a complete re-install in the (not to distant) future. The use of over compliant length HDMI cables needs to be linked to all the factors mentioned above but with the rider that the best method of testing if it will be successful still lies with plugging it in. Even at these lengths, the cheaper options are still worth considering if the installation of long HDMI cables is easily accessed and they work OK with your present equipment.

Understanding HDMI

Understanding HDMI

Hdmi

The HDMI standard was created by many of the leading manufacturers, these include: Panasonic, Hitachi, Philips, Sony, Thomson (RCA), Silicon Image and Toshiba. HDMI is not just a used in video transfer, it also has embedded multi-channel audio support.
A lot of people out there find all these new "options" that have come with HD technology very confusing (i.e. Deep colour and DVD audio). So below is a brief guide to some of the options that are available below.

Deep colour: This in simple terms allows you HD television to go from a display using millions of colours to a display of billions of colours. It also increases the contrast ratio, therefore allowing more grey shades between white and black. Colour banding lines are completely eliminated and this gives the viewer unrivalled colour accuracy and vividness due to the smooth transitions and grading between colour and tone.

How much better is 1080p than 720p: In purely technical terms it's 225%. The sound quality is also improved by a further 50% with the new totally lossless, bit-for-bit Dolby True HD and DTS Master HD multi channel audio content.

xvYCC / xv Colour: This is a new standard brought in with HDMI 1.3 (IEC 61966-2-4, more commonly known as xvYCC, the shorthand term for "Extended YCC Colorimetry for Video Applications". This standard has the brand name "x.v.Colour"). This new standard has 1.8 times more display colours than the previous standard, enabling a more pleasurable viewing experience.

DVD audio: This digital format allows a range of audio channels from single through 5.1 channel surround sound. The audio quality of a DVD Audio disc can be substantially higher than a standard audio CD. DVD Audio supports bit depths up to 24-bit and sample rates up to 192 kHz, CD audio can only reach 16-bit and 44.1 kHz.

Cabling has always been an issue with recent electronic advances, for example you need this type of cable and can't go over a certain length, etc, etc. HDMI technology has been designed to use a standard copper cable construction. In order to allow cable manufacturers to improve their products through the use of new and emerging technologies, the HDMI standard specifies the required performance of a cable but does not specify a maximum cable length. Cables are now available in lengths of up to 15 meters.

In summary; HDMI digital interconnectivity provides a superior, uncompressed digital video and audio quality. A popular interface enabling the transmission of high definition data and various content, with a simple, user friendly connector that replaces the maze of cabling behind you television.

Do Top-Selling HDTVs Stand Up To Strict Scrutiny? Part 6

Do Top-Selling HDTVs Stand Up To Strict Scrutiny? Part 6

Hdmi

David Upstages Goliath

Vizio has emerged as the top-selling flat panel HDTV (LCD and Plasma combined), ahead of Goliath brands like Sony, Samsung and Panasonic, riding on its low-price appeal.

The VP42 Plasma HDTV has been praised for its "relatively accurate" color, including deep blacks. That apart, the set has a fairly clean picture without much false contouring; its user menu has fine color temperature controls. Two HDMI and one PC input make connectivity a strong feature.

Similarly, reviews of the Vizio GV42L LCD HDTV have been flattering, and draw attention to its "sophisticated styling" and "detachable speakers".

The Price Attraction

Offering more bang for the buck, Vizio's chief attraction is its price which is way below those of the name brands. Given this fact, the average buyer is, more often than not, aware of the compromise he/she has made, with regard to not getting assured premium quality.

The Quality Conundrum

The Vizio VP42HDTV (Plasma) delivers shadow detail of less than average quality. Darker areas have a reddish tinge; and a buzzing sound is perceptible.

The Vizio VX32L LCD cannot be watched at an angle; not everyone is likely to approve its funky styling.

The sound on the VX37L is less than pleasing, and the PIP functions do not work except with HDMI, Component or RGB. The remote response is sluggish; menu selection without the remote is tedious. The aspect ratio does not get automatically adjusted when you switch from SDTV to HDTV and back; you have to do this manually.

Channel surfers will find the slow changing of channels irritating. There is also a sound lag when you view digital channels.

In the Vizio 42" LCD TV, the contrast ratio is an abysmally low 1000:1. (A comparable set from Samsung has a 10000:1 ratio.) The response time is slow, just 8ms.

How Vizio Manages Its Low Price

Vizio keeps its price low by buying surplus parts from other manufacturers and repackaging under its brand name. The unknown factor in this for a prospective buyer is that one set in a Vizio showroom could be a Pioneer, while another could be a Toshiba. Thus, buyers are never certain about what they are buying.

Warranty Blues

Vizio offers a one-year warranty on its sets. However, onsite repairs are offered only on sets that are 30" or bigger, assuming that such repairs are within the terms of the warranty. In case you own a smaller set, you would have to ship it to the company at your own cost (about 0).

Extended warranties are available at a price which some may view as being disproportionately high, given the relatively low cost of the TV.

Last Comment

When you buy a low priced product such as Vizio, you must remember that you can only expect to get what you pay for. If you are prepared to make some compromise on quality in order to save some money, weigh the benefits carefully before you decide to buy.

What's the Difference Between HDMI Cable and Component Cables?

What's the Difference Between HDMI Cable and Component Cables?

Hdmi

Over a short length, the cables don't make a difference. What is different is that in the case of the component cables, the TV has to convert the component analog signal to digital. In the case of the HDMI cable, the signal is already digital. So there may be a perceptible difference if the TV doesn't do the conversion well.

Putting aside picture quality, the reason you should use the HDMI cable is that it carries the HDCP signals, component does not. If the source device, say a cable box, looks for the HDCP handshake, and doesn't get it, it Will not output an HD signal. So if you want to watch HBO in HD from a cable box, you have to use HDMI or DVI.

I use the component cables. Then again, I spent about on them (gold plated ends, large conductors, thick shielding, etc) for both the video components and audio channels. And, I bought them a few years ago, before HDMI cables were even around. The difference in performance between top-end component video cables and HDMI cables is negligent. But, if you just use standard RCA cables - like the cheap ones the cable TV company gives you - you won't get as good of quality as the HDMI cables.

As HDMI cable connections become more and more widely used, we are often asked: which is better, HDMI or component video? The answer, as it happens, is not cut-and-dried.

First, one note: everything said here is as applicable to DVI as to HDMI; DVI appears on fewer and fewer consumer electronic devices all the time, so isn't as often asked about, but DVI and HDMI are essentially the same as one another, image-quality-wise. The principal differences are that HDMI carries audio as well as video, and uses a different type of connector, but both use the same encoding scheme, and that's why a DVI source can be connected to an HDMI monitor, or vice versa, with a DVI/HDMI cable, with no intervening converter box.

The upshot of this article--in case you're not inclined to read all the details--is that it's very hard to predict whether an HDMI connection will produce a better or worse image than an analog component video connection. There will often be significant differences between the digital and the analog signals, but those differences are not inherent in the connection type and instead depend upon the characteristics of the source device (e.g., your DVD player) and the display device (e.g., your TV set). Why that is, however, requires a bit more discussion.

Several people a day are searching for an interconnection solution by trying to connect HDMI to Component outputs through a cable for their high-definition equipment. Unfortunately, this isn't a matter of rearranging wires and having the right type of connector. There is a fundamental analog versus digital incompatibility problem similar to the upcoming digital broadcast TV switchover versus your current rabbit ears that receive analog broadcast signals. They aren't compatible and leave people confused just like the poor fellow in the commercial.

Component video is based on an analog format. With analog signals, the voltage signal on the wire is in a wave format and how the wave changes in height is what is important. Theoretically it has an infinite number of values between zero and the maximum, somewhat like the variable windshield wipers I had on an old Thunderbird. With the HDMI or DVI format, these are based on digital signaling. Digital as you probably have heard, uses ones and zeros with a series of pulses all at the same height and they are either present or missing. At the other end, processing equipment reassembles the information. In a 4-bit binary coding, you can have 1 of 16 different values as 4 1's and 0's assembled as a group can have 16 different combinations. So equipment at the other end of the cable that is detecting signals and looking for analog sine waves would put out total gibberish if it just received pulses of 1's and 0's.

Some solutions are very easy. If an HDMI or DVI output is available on both boxes, use those. The difference between DVI and HDMI is that HDMI caries the audio in addition to the video signals. But DVI is just as good and other than the expense of an extra audio cable, that will solve your problem. If you were trying to use the Component outputs because you already had the HDMI port tied up, they make HDMI switch boxes that are fairly inexpensive where you can plug multiple HDMI cables in on one side with one output on the other.

Via component cables an analog signal is transfered. HDMI is digital. Among other things this has the following advantage: As long as the data is transferred correctly you have the perfect image data arriving at your TV. There won't be a single pixel difference in what the 'sending' device puts out and what reaches your TV. Component signals (as all analog signals) can vary in quality and you can get disturbances.

So actually: At first glance HDMI cables might appear more expensive than component cables, but that's not entirely true. For HDMI the requiered quality of the cable is related to the length you need. If you only need to cover a short distance (two or three meters) a cheap cable will give you the best possible result that could ever be achieved by any means ... it's digital ... the cheap cable has no influence on the image quality ... just like the network cable your computer uses to hook up to the inet has no influence on the image quality of videos you download / stream.

Of course this doesn't mean component is bad: Among affordable analog video connections it's probably by far the best, but HDMI just has the advantage of not having to care about the signal being unintentionally "affected" by outside influences during transfer. So if you can: HDMI is the better choice.

Will My HDMI 1.3 Cable I Use For My PS3 Handle Full HD 1080p For 3DTV?

Will My HDMI 1.3 Cable I Use For My PS3 Handle Full HD 1080p For 3DTV?

Hdmi

The new 3D technology is coming at us fast and furious. So it is not surprising that it is bringing a lot of confusion and uncertainty, especially when it comes it older hardware and it's ability to handle 3D pictures. Many believe if you want to enjoy 3D at Full 1080p video resolution, the new HDMI 1.4 cable is required. And that the HDMI 1.3 cable will only produce a video resolution of 1080i for 3D.

If this was the case, older Blu-ray Player's like PlayStation 3, which will become 3D capable in September 2010 and has a HDMI 1.3 output, will not be sufficient to produce images of 1080p when playing a 3D Blu-ray Disc. As of now, Sony's PS3 is the only older Blu-ray Player that will support 3D Blu-rays. All other 3D Blu-ray Players are 2010 models and come equipped with the necessary hardware and codec already on board.

The truth is, that HDMI 1.3 cables can handle 3D output. As long as the HDMI cable you are using is rated "High Speed" or better it will support Blu-ray 3D output at Full HD 1080p resolution. Two key components for a source device to handle 3D output are codec and meta data. Sony will have to includes these enhances via their 3D Firmware upgrade. Judging by pass upgrades, such as providing support for internal decoding of DTS-HD Master Audio, Sony should have no problems accomplishing this task.

The codec used to store 3D is Multiview Video Coding or MVC. It produces a Full 1080p frame for each eye and using only 50 percent more storage space than a 2D disc. The PS3 was created before the MVC codec, so Sony has to implement MVC support without changing any hardware. Also required from the PlayStation 3 is the ability to produce and receive, from the 3D display, the correct meta data in the communication which happens between any HDMI-equipped devices.

This communication is done via Extended Display Identification Data or EDID. It transfers information sent from a video display to a source over E-DDC lines to describe its capabilities. A 3DTV will used the EDID to see if they are 3D capable, and if the PlayStation 3 will work with the TV. Basically the PS3 must be capable to understand and react to this new EDID value sent by the 3DTV.

Once Sony has made the firmware available for you to upgrade your PlayStation 3 with the new 3D technology, you should have no issues with using a HDMI 1.3 cable. According to most experts, a HDMI cable should not be a great concern for consumers in regards to 3D. Mainly due to the fact HDMI cables and hardware are not being marketed with version numbers (1.3,1.4) anymore. When purchasing a HDMI cable you should come across one of the following: HDMI Standard, HDMI High Speed, HDMI Standard with Ethernet, HDMI High Speed with Ethernet, and HDMI Standard Automotive.

Instead of deciding what HDMI version number you need, your focus should be on what feature you require support for. Whether it be for Deep Color, Audio Return Channel or 3D. A High Speed HDMI cable will be able to transfer the signal from your PS3 to a 3DTV. Finding a High Speed HDMi cable should not be a problem since the vast majority of HDMI cables manufactured and sold during the past 3 years have been High Speed HDMI cables.

*** One thing to be aware of is that you will not be able to transfer a Blu-ray 3D signal through to a non 3D Audio/Video receiver. Because these older HDMI 1.3 A/V receiver do not have the HDMI EDID language for 3D display capabilities, they are unable to transfer information from display to the source device (3D Blu-ray Player). A good work around to this problem would be to purchase Blu-ray Players with dual HDMI outputs, such as Panasonic's DMP-BDT350 or Samsung's BD-C7900. ***

Fix PS3 Black Screen Errors - How to Fix Playstation 3 That Shows Black Screen?

Fix PS3 Black Screen Errors - How to Fix Playstation 3 That Shows Black Screen?

Hdmi

If you have to fix PS3 black screen problems then you shouldn't worry. There are many reasons for this to happen that are easily fixable. Having to fix PS3 black screen errors doesn't mean you have to buy a new console and it can be remedied in minutes. The solutions are easy and anyone can perform them.

Why does ps3 display black screen?

The cause of these errors is most often related to the HDMI port on the Playstation 3. To fix PS3 black screen errors you must first make sure that all cables are plugged in correctly and in the right slots. If this is the case then you need to check the settings both on your console and your monitor. If your TV appears to be working correctly then attempt to use the default audio video cables that came with the unit.

If this succeeds then you can fix Ps3 black screen by simply changing your systems display settings to HDMI from within the operating system. When this happens the screen will go blank again until you switch over to the HDMI cable. If this is successful then your monitor should be displaying the image from the cable when you switch it over.

If this does not fix the ps3 unable to display videos problem for you then you may want to replace the HDMI cable itself. Cables do occasionally go out and a malfunctioning unit could cause the problem. Replacing the cable can also fix PS3 black screen errors and let you get back to using your console.

Of the many errors for the console you can repair PS3 black screen easier than most. It requires no disassembling of the unit or expensive repairs. Always remember to make sure that all cables and cords are plugged in securely to their respective slots. Finally make sure to have the proper settings selected in order to ensure the best picture quality possible.

Where To Buy A Cheap iPod Touch 4G

Where To Buy A Cheap iPod Touch 4G

Hdmi

The iPod Touch 4 have finally came out! The normal prices for it is for the 8GB 9, the 32GB is 9 and the big 32GB is 9. That is really expensive but I have found ways to get it at a much lower price.

So where to buy a cheap iPod Touch 4G?

Craigslist - A great website on craigslist you can definitely find some great bargains on iPods, iPhones, iTouches and other thing, but be careful their are some scammers on craigslist so you have to watch out for them.

Amazon - A fairly obvious choice on amazon different companies signup to make money. Make sure you check out their sellers rating before you buy from someone on there.

eBay - Although it can be scary sometimes using eBay since their are some scammers there are good people selling their stuff for a reasonable price. I most of the time only deal with power sellers.

Is there anyway to get a free iPod Touch 4?

Yes, some sites want people to try their sponsor product out and in return the sponsor pays the site and they buy your iPod Touch 4G with that money. Its a new thing called "affiliate marketing" that really is starting to be the main way of marketing.

Most of the time people think this is a scam, but they never done the proper research to really check it out. I have done all my research and I even tested these sites. I was able to get a free Xbox 360 Slim and about 0. Its so easy.
